Bernie & Edith in Calgary, Alberta

Hello all,
We are very excited to be in our new city. So much has happened in the last month that not only are our heads spinning, but all of it screams the goodness of God. Some of you don't know what's been happening with us recently and so we want to update all of you. The story begins back in May when Bernie resigned with Young Life. This opened the doors of opportunity for us, and so when began to ask ourselves "What's next?" Our long time dream of moving out West began to spring in our hearts. We prayed about it and we decided that I would apply to the Alberta government to be able to teach here. It was a long, expensive, and tiring process, but I persisted. Throughout the summer we both did a lot of waiting and wondering. Nothing was happening with my application and I was beginning to wonder if I need to pursue anything else. I had no desire to look into anything else, so we just continued to wait, as Bernie searched for jobs in Calgary as well as in Ontario. He even had an interview with Sportsnet in Scarbourough for a job that suited him so unbelievably that it was almost surreal. Anyways, the hiring pool was very competitive and sorry to say he did not get the job. One of our plans this summer was to go out East for a road trip in the second week of August, and we felt uncomfortable leaving not knowing what's happening to our future. Days before we were leaving I got a call from the Calgary Board of Education offering me an interview on October 3. Needless to say, we headed out East and had an awesome time with Lisa and Adam. Bernie got together with a friend the day after we got home, and this friend offered to fly me to Calgary sooner, so that I don't have to wait so long to start teaching. Miraculously, I got in interview the last week of August because of a cancellation. I flew out within days and they hired me right there. While I was in Calgary, I got all kinds of things started, like getting a real estate agent, my police report done, a mortgage broker, etc. When I got home, we decided that we are going to step out in faith and get the ball rolling to move to Calgary. This meant that I had to resign from the Niagara School Board. I still worked the first three weeks of school, while being in the process of selling our beautiful home in St. Catharines, selling our boat and van, buying a newer car, selling all kinds of larger items, and packing the whole house. It was truely amazing to see how God took care of every big and little detail during this time. Our moving date was September 29 and it was a sad day to leave our home, our wonderful neighbours, awesome church, and the high school. We went to see the kids at the school that day to say goodbye. The next day we drove to Calgary. It took 4 days of about 10 hours each day. It was beautiful and the weather was awesome! Some highlights were seeing the Terry Fox monument in Thunderbay, going to "Dog River" where Corner Gas is filmed, and seeing the underground organization and bootlegging of Al Capone in Moosejaw. Since we've been here, we bought a brand new house, I started working, and we are continuing to plug away at all the paperwork that needs to be done, like licences, insurance, mortagage, health care, phone lines, internet, cable - get the idea? We've been busy doing all kinds of fun stuff too, like visiting friends, going hiking in the mountains near Lake Louise, going to a concert, watching the Calgary Flames, going to a university volleyball tournament, the Calgary zoo, etc. Sounds crazy, but we're loving it here. It's sunny every day. We had snow the first day, but since then nothing. It won't be long and we will be busy moving into our new home (Oct 25), getting set up, painting, and doing some landscaping. It is all very exciting, but busy too. God has blessed us with this home and our new city. We look forward to seeing Him work through us as we love others for His namesake. We miss our friends in Ontario, but we know that these friendships will live on. We love you guys and hope you keep in touch with us!
Lots of love,
Berns & Edes
